Modelling the depletion length induced by modulation instability in distributed optical fibre sensors [9157-177]

چکیده
An analytical model for the depletion length of modulation instability in single-mode optical fibres is proposed. The model gives the possibility to determine the maximum sensing distance that distributed optical fibre sensors can reach before being limited by the pump depletion induced by modulation instability. The important role of the noise level in the evolution of both modulation instability and the respective power depletion is clarified. The model gives a closedform expression helpful for a predictive design and is validated comparing the analytical results obtained by the model with measurements in a 25 km long Brillouin fibre sensor.

Mitigating modulation instability in Brillouin distributed fibre sensors
A thorough study of the generation of modulation instability (MI) in distributed Brillouin fibre sensors is presented. ASE noise co-propagating with the pump pulses within the MI gain spectrum has been identified to be an important factor seeding modulation instability and reducing its power threshold. The paper describes how optical narrowband filtering reduces the pump depletion resulting fro...
متن کاملDetrimental effect of modulation instability on distributed optical fibre sensors using stimulated Brillouin scattering
Modulation instability can limit the resolution and the range of distributed fibre sensors based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In this paper we analyse this process and suggest adequate methods to overcome it.
متن کاملEffect of Nonlinear Phase Variation in Optical Millimetre Wave Radio over Fibre Systems
In this paper, we propose an optical millimetre wave radio-over-fibre (mm-wave RoF) system that uses a dual drive Mach Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM), which is biased at the maximum transmission biasing point, to generate an optical double sideband-suppressed carrier. The input to the DD-MZM are binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-phase shift keying (8-PSK) and...
متن کاملEnhanced response in Brillouin distributed optical fibre sensors by simultaneous time and frequency pump multiplexing [9157-188]
A technique to enhance the response of Brillouin distributed sensors is proposed and experimentally validated. The method consists in creating a multi-frequency pump pulse interacting with a multi-frequency continuous-wave probe. The power of each pulse at a distinct frequency is lower than the threshold for nonlinear effects, while the sensor response remains given by the total power of all pu...
متن کاملBrillouin Echoes for Advanced Distributed Sensing in Optical Fibres
Brillouin scattering is particularly efficient and attractive for the implementation of strain and temperature distributed sensing in optical fibres. Recently a trend has been observed that modern advanced applications require a substantial step towards better spatial resolution, while preserving temperature/strain precision over a long range. For this purpose the state of the art does not sati...
